Frequently Asked Questions

If yours isn't here, ask us

Playing

Is it free?

Yes. There's nothing to buy and no account required. The site is supported by ads on the information pages; the game itself is ad-free.

How many people can play?

Three to eight per room. Three is the minimum because voting needs at least two captions that aren't yours. If you only have two people, join a public room or open your private room to the public and let a stranger make up the numbers.

Does everyone need to be in the same place?

No. It was built for friends in different cities during lockdown. Send the room link over whatever chat you already use and play from anywhere. It also works great on one screen at a party, with everyone using their own phone as their hand.

Does it work on phones?

Yes — most people play on a phone. Any modern browser works; nothing to install. Keep the tab open during the game: the room only knows you're there while the page is loaded.

How long is a game?

Roughly two minutes per round, so a default five-round game is ten to twelve minutes including the lobby. Hosts can set anywhere from one to ten rounds.

Can I turn the sounds off?

Yes — tap the speaker button in the bottom-left corner of any game screen. The game plays short cues when a round starts, in the last five seconds of a timer, when the votes are revealed, and at the end of the game. Your choice is remembered on that device. If you hear nothing at all, your browser may be waiting for you to tap something first; sounds start after your first interaction with the page.

Can I join a game that's already started?

Not mid-game. The room reopens to new players as soon as the current game ends, and everyone lands back in the lobby for a rematch.

Rooms and hosting

What's the difference between private and public rooms?

A private room is only reachable by people who have the link or the four-digit room number. A public room is open to anyone who presses "Join Public Game", and it starts automatically after a minute in the lobby. Hosts can switch a private room to public from the lobby if they're short of players.

I got kicked out — why?

The game removes anyone it hasn't heard from in about 20 seconds, which usually means the tab was closed, the phone locked, or the connection dropped. If it was the host, hosting passes to the next player automatically. Rejoin with the same link once the current game is over. The host can also remove players deliberately from the lobby.

I'm the host and want a different number of rounds.

Use the "Rounds" dropdown in the lobby before pressing Start. Settings can't change mid-game.

Accounts and sign-in

Do I need an account?

No. Enter a name and play. Signing in with Google is optional: it uses your Google name and picture in the game and unlocks the premium GIFs and captions for the whole room when the host is signed in.

What do you do with my Google details?

We keep your email, name and picture so you're recognised next time, and nothing else — we never see your password and we don't post anything to your account. Full details are in the privacy policy, and you can ask us to delete them at any time.

Why doesn't my name show up the way I typed it?

Names are trimmed and any HTML is stripped. Emoji are fine. Click your name in the lobby to change it.

Content

Where do the GIFs come from?

They're a curated deck we maintain by hand and add to every week — GIFs chosen because they work as a reaction with a wide range of captions. Rating the prompt at the end of each round tells us which ones to keep.

Do my custom captions go anywhere?

Custom captions are saved with your player name so we can review them. The best ones get added to the official deck of cards that every player is dealt from — so if you write something great, thousands of people may end up playing it. Captions that don't get added are never shown to anyone outside your room.

Is the content appropriate for kids?

The official deck is PG-13-ish: rude, not explicit. Custom captions are written by players, so a private room is only as clean as the people in it. The game isn't designed for children under 13.

Can I download the GIF with the winning caption on it?

Yes — when a custom caption wins a round, the GIF is re-rendered in your browser with the caption burned in, and a Download button appears on the results screen. It's yours to share.

Something's broken. Who do I tell?

dylan@wdygif.com, or the Discord. Include the room number and roughly when it happened.
